On this page, I would like to discuss the importance of coding and how I learned what coding was. Through my professor, Dr. Hill, I first discovered what coding was. Dr. Hill directed us to the website http://code.org/learn, where we completed the 'Code with Anna and Elsa' activities. In this short hour of coding, I learned so much about what coding is and what it can do. I explored the website further and tried different coding activities.
I believe that these coding activities could be used to a great extent with elementary school students. I think that many students would really enjoy getting to use these activities, learning how to code, and in a way playing these ‘games’. In my opinion, students might see these coding lessons as more like computer games because they are fun to do. From what I learned in the videos, it seems very important for elementary students to begin learning about coding and computer programming and these activities would be easy to incorporate into STEM curriculum. This is my first personal experience using and even learning about coding and computer programming. I can see how all of the successful people in the video want to emphasize the importance of computer education and coding programs in schools. Coding and computer knowledge are what made all of these people so successful. I have no doubt that coding is a useful skill and I think it should be offered as an additional class or incorporated into everyday curriculum to implement STEM skills. In my opinion, there are many important computer skills that students need to learn to be successful in today's world. I think that students need to have classes for typing lessons, lessons about power point and word functions. As a student, these skills will be used on a daily basis throughout their education and into professional every-day life. Technology is ever-present and ever-growing in our society today and students with strong technological knowledge and skills will seriously benefit.
Below, I have inserted a document of my hours of code:

The National Science Foundation developed the TeachEngineering.org project, which has resources and activities that teachers can use in their classrooms and curriculums. I scanned through many of these activities and prepared a critical review of one called Charlotte's Web. In this review, I discussed the materials, benefits, and practicality of this activity and how it might be used in the classroom. Below, I have attached my critical review, which contains pictures of the activity as well.

still applicable. I intended part of the lesson to focus on transportation safety, which is very applicable to a kindergarten class. Students are aware of things that keep them safe in the car and will be able to apply these concepts to the egg cart.

"The Boston Museum of Science has developed materials to be used in introducing children to engineering and technology. The goal of this initiative is to inspire the next generation of engineers, inventors, and innovators."
    - Dr. Hill
This page is an analysis of the 'Engineering is Elementary' book Galya and Natasha's Rocky Adventure. I read this book, completed the "try it" activity, and prepared a PowerPoint presentation about the book, its materials and its activity.
Despite some criticisms that are evident in the PowerPoint, I believe that this book would provide a great lesson for elementary age students. The activity itself and the lesson are relatively easy and therefore, I think they would act as a great introduction to engineering for a Kindergarten class. I would recommend the use of this book in a lesson plan for a kindergarten class. The STEM curriculum is crucial to a student's education in today's world. The implementation of lessons that include things like these 'Engineering is Elementary' books is a great way to incorporate the STEM curriculum.

Cart Challenge was an activity in which we created a cart that would successfully protect an egg while it rode down a ramp. As kindergarteners might have trouble creating and building their own carts, I think that this activity would best be used as a class activity. My suggestion is that the class would brainstorm design ideas as a group and then the teacher would construct the cart that the class came up with. The students could take turns releasing the cart down the ramp and seeing if the egg was successfully protected. I wrote a lesson plan for this activity assuming that older students would be building their own carts, but the lesson plan can be modified accordingly. Despite this, the Georgia Standards are still applicable.
