On this page, I would like to discuss the importance of coding and how I learned what coding was. Through my professor, Dr. Hill, I first discovered what coding was. Dr. Hill directed us to the website http://code.org/learn, where we completed the 'Code with Anna and Elsa' activities. In this short hour of coding, I learned so much about what coding is and what it can do. I explored the website further and tried different coding activities. I believe that these coding activities could be used to a great extent with elementary school students. I think that many students would really enjoy getting to use these activities, learning how to code, and in a way playing these ‘games’. In my opinion, students might see these coding lessons as more like computer games because they are fun to do. From what I learned in the videos, it seems very important for elementary students to begin learning about coding and computer programming and these activities would be easy to incorporate into STEM curriculum. This is my first personal experience using and even learning about coding and computer programming. I can see how all of the successful people in the video want to emphasize the importance of computer education and coding programs in schools. Coding and computer knowledge are what made all of these people so successful. I have no doubt that coding is a useful skill and I think it should be offered as an additional class or incorporated into everyday curriculum to implement STEM skills. In my opinion, there are many important computer skills that students need to learn to be successful in today's world. I think that students need to have classes for typing lessons, lessons about power point and word functions. As a student, these skills will be used on a daily basis throughout their education and into professional every-day life. Technology is ever-present and ever-growing in our society today and students with strong technological knowledge and skills will seriously benefit.
